We organise debates in bars (Sci [email protected]), workshops at institutes (Sci DF Talks), social activities for scientists (Sci DF4Fun) and participate actively at congresses.
This project has contributed significantly to community building of the scientific community of Barcelona: It united a big variety of people in its team: Over 80 persons from over 50 institutions from the scientific community of Barcelona have been involved so far in the team and we met with over 140 people from over 80 institutions who were interested to collaborate.(12-16h, Plaza Interior PRBB – Parc de Recerca Biomèdica de Barcelona)We have intiated the Marcha por la Ciencia Barcelona (#M4Sc Bcn) and mobilised the scientific community to join us.
For example, some isotopes of uranium can decay into lead.
The decay process for the zircons involves alpha particle emission from uranium and/or thorium inside the zircon.
The perception, fueled by our secular society, is that this technique provides iron-clad proof the earth is millions of years old. The carbon dating method measures the amount of Carbon-14 (14-C) in organic (plant and animal) remains.
14-C is produced in the atmosphere and during the process of photosynthesis plants take in CO2, which contains tiny amounts of 14-C. However, once a plant or animal dies it stops taking in 14-C which gradually decays away.
Because today’s rate of decay has been established the less 14-C in an item the older it will date.
While this sounds straightforward, unobserved assumptions corrupt the integrity of carbon dating results.
